Interventions for Addiction

Many times the addict or alcoholic will be the last to truly know that they need help. For some people, this is difficult to understand, because how could a person who uses heroin, alcohol, or any other substance every day be unaware that they were addicted. When it comes to addiction, this is a very common scenario.

Alcoholism and addiction are illnesses where denial is a large component. Why this is, is not entirely clear, but many alcoholics and addicts have expressed the fact that for years they believed that they had control over their substance use, even though this was obviously untrue. It was as if a veil descended on that part of their mind and they were completely unable to see that almost all of the problems in their life stemmed from the fact that they couldn’t stop abusing substances.

Since this is the case, and since alcoholism and addiction are chronic illnesses, there are certain instances where the family may need to intervene on the part of the addict or alcoholic and get them the help they so desperately need.

At Second Chance Counseling, we offer intervention services for family and friends who are looking to get the addicted loved one in their life help. Sometimes people will want to attempt an intervention on their own, and while this is a valiant and understandable desire, it is best to include professionals, like the ones at Second Chance Counseling. The reason for this is because interventions can be emotionally charged situations and without an objective third-party to help guide the process, they can easily come off the rails and deviate from their intended purpose.

What is an Intervention?

An intervention is the process of intervening in the life of an addict or alcoholic in order to help them get sober. These actions are usually taken by family or close friends of the addict or alcoholic, as they are the ones who have stood by and watched the addiction take hold.

Often times family member and friends will gather with a trained interventionist and set up a plan of action for getting their loved one help. This usually includes a plan for treatment after the intervention, a plan for what they will do if the addict or alcoholic does not agree to seek treatment, and a plan for the intervention itself.

At Second Chance Counseling we help family members and friends create a situation where they can address their loved one directly and inform them of the effects of their actions. Family member and friends are given the space they need in order to finally speak their truth, as well as set up boundaries if the addict or alcoholic does not wish to seek treatment.

Who Can Benefit from an Intervention?

At Second Chance Counseling, we understand that deciding to perform an intervention on a loved one is never an easy decision. There has more than likely been years of pain leading up to this decision and we understand the toll that this has taken on you. Our wish, is to provide your family with the support you need in order to address your loved one’s addiction, and to provide a course of actions moving forward. We seek to guide you through this trying and difficult time and to help you in any way we possibly can.

We have found that almost all addicts and alcoholics can benefit from having an intervention performed on them, as it gives them the opportunity to finally face their addiction and drop the charade they kept up for quite some time.

Something that is often overlooked when talking about addiction is just how tiring it can be for the addict or alcoholic. They have to hide their substance abuse each and every day and they have to balance all of their lies, remembering what was told to whom. When given the opportunity to finally surrender all of this, many addicts and alcoholics are grateful for the opportunity, even if they react poorly at first. They realize during the course of the intervention that their family means business and faced without any other viable options they submit to help, and are given the ability to truly heal from their addiction issues.
