Intensive Outpatient Program for Adolescents in Ohio
According to recent surveys, 75% of American high school seniors have tried alcohol, illicit drugs, or nicotine. This does not come as much of a surprise because anyone who has gone through the American education system within the past 25 years understands that drinking and using drugs has somehow become a part of the high school experience. Many teenage movies that comes out of Hollywood depict some sort of party scene where teenagers down alcohol or smoke pot, so as a culture we almost encourage this sort of behavior and look to it as a right of passage.
For many high school students drinking or using drugs does not represent a problem, beyond the possible legal implications, but for some, what at first appears to be a harmless drink or a harmless smoke is just the beginning of a long struggle with addiction. It has been found that 90% of Americans who struggle with addiction started using addictive substances during their adolescence. Some of these individuals will have started to experience the negative consequences of addiction by the time they reach adulthood, while others develop further into their addiction during college and early adulthood. Regardless of what stage they are at in their addiction before the age of 18, it has been shown that with early intervention adolescent addiction is mostly preventable.
At Second Chance Counseling we understand the importance of offering substance abuse treatment options for adolescents, and at our facility, we seek to help teenagers avoid the years of pain that addiction can bring by guiding them into recovery at an early age. We also understand how difficult it can be to recover from addiction while in your teenage years and we understand that finding a recovery community that fits your needs can prove problematic. Our staff is well equipped to help you through these challenges and get you on the path to a life of a sobriety.
What is Adolescent Intensive Outpatient?
Adolescent intensive outpatient, like the kind we offer at Second Chance Counseling, is a form of substance abuse treatment where teenagers live at home, but attend group and individual therapy 3 times a week. This treatment usually occurs after school so that the teen does not have to interrupt their lives tremendously in their attempt at sobriety, and it can be scheduled around work or any other extra curricular activity that they may have.
Studies have shown that if addiction is intervened during adolescence, the possibility of avoiding an escalation in addiction in the proceeding years is not only possible, but probable. In order for this to occur, the adolescent must have the support they need in order to recover, which is what our facility seeks to do.
It is sometimes difficult for teens to come to terms with the fact that they have an issue with alcohol or drugs. They find it hard to imagine an adult life where they are addicted to drugs and since they are usually just starting out on their path of addiction, many still believe that they maintain control over their substance usage.
They look to their friends, who more than likely also use drugs or alcohol, as evidence that what they are doing is normal, and they tell themselves that they are just having fun or just being a teen. The problem with this line of thinking for adolescents who suffer from addiction is that what they are doing is not normal, but is rather the beginning stages of addiction.
At Second Chance Counseling, we seek to break through the layer of denial that many addicts and alcoholics have and show our clients that there is a better way of life for them. We seek to give the teens that attend our IOP a new lease on life and save them the years of addiction that could possibly follow.
In some cases, the teenagers who attend our program are doing so as a means to appease the courts. Beyond just helping them with legal trouble, we look to plant the seed of recovery that will hopefully grow as we give our clients the tools they need to break the burgeoning cycle of addiction.
In short, every teen who suffers from addiction issues could benefit from our program and with the structure and support we offer recovery from addiction at an early age is a real possibility.
